Trump guilty on all 34 counts in hush money trial, in historic first for a former U.S. president

(CNBC) A New York jury on Thursday found former President Donald Trump guilty of all 34 felony charges of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels by his then-personal lawyer before the 2016 election. Trump is the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of any crime. Trump’s demeanor did not change during the reading of the verdict. His son, Eric Trump, looked angry.

Biden pledges to name progressives to the Supreme Court, suggesting he expects vacancies

(CNN) President Joe Biden promised Black voters Wednesday that he would appoint progressives to the US Supreme Court if elected to a second term, suggesting he expects vacancies on the high court over the next four years. “The next president, they’re going to be able to appoint a couple justices, and I’ll be damned — if in fact we’re able to change some of the justices when they retire and put in really progressive judges like we’ve always had, tell me that won’t change your life,” he said during a campaign rally in Philadelphia.

Jill Biden Sums Up Donald Trump With 1 Withering Word

(Huff Post) Jill Biden argued that this election isn’t about age, despite the attempts of some conservative figures ― including Trump himself ― to portray Biden as in cognitive decline. Biden will be 81 and Trump will be 78 when the November election takes place, she pointed out, saying: “They’re basically the same age.” “This election is about character,” she added. “You have two choices,” she continued. “You have my husband, Joe, who you all know, who has integrity. He’s strong, he’s steady, he’s a leader, he’s smart, he’s energetic.” Then, in one word, the first lady summed up Trump. “Or you have chaos,” she said, drawing applause from the audience. “Yes, you have chaos,” she repeated.

Federal probe urged of Black Lives Matter protest killing after Texas pardon

(Reuters) The attorneys general of more than a dozen states urged the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday to open a federal criminal civil rights probe into the shooting death of a Black Lives Matter protester whose killer was pardoned two weeks ago by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. In their letter calling for an investigation, the attorneys general, all of them Democrats, challenged the propriety of the Texas "stand your ground" law cited by Abbott, a Republican, as the basis for his act of clemency.

In closing, Trump's team takes the jurors for idiots

(Washington Post) Donald Trump’s lawyers ended their defense of the former president in a way uniquely suited to their client: with a ludicrous and easily debunked lie. With indignation, Blanche lied to the jury: “You heard that politicians reacted negatively to the ‘Access Hollywood’ tape. They didn’t testify. You heard that there was even talk about something consequential for President Trump, who was the Republican nominee. But none of that happened. None of that is true.” Republican officeholders didn’t rain denunciations on Trump? Party elders didn’t discuss replacing him as the GOP nominee? Blanche must have supposed that these jurors have been sequestered. In a cave. For 10 years.

Former Apprentice Producer Confirms Racist Trump Tapes

(PoliticusUSA) A former producer on The Apprentice has confirmed that there were tapes of Trump making racist and sexist comments on the NBC show. Bill Pruitt a former producer on The Apprentice wrote in Slate: "... we scammed. We swindled. Nobody heard the racist and misogynistic comments or saw the alleged cheating, the bluffing, or his hair taking off in the wind. Those tapes, I’ve come to believe, will never be found."

Florida sticks by social studies standard teaching 'benefit' of slavery

(Politico) The Florida Board of Education approved several tweaks Wednesday to the state’s standards for teaching social studies, but left intact controversial pieces on Black history that sparked widespread backlash last year. The updated standards include new required instruction surrounding the Sept. 11 attacks and the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, as well as several other more subtle changes. Opponents, though, including Florida’s largest teachers union and free speech advocates, slammed the state for sticking by its “warped” telling of Black history.
